Course Outline Title: Observing the Desert Sun Discover observing our daytime star, the sun. John Varsik will explain the features visible on the sun and how to safely observe them. We begin with coverage of basic solar astronomy. After a break for lunch, we concentrate on practical observing techniques using small telescopes. Solar observing is very different from nighttime astronomy and specialized techniques are needed. Choosing the best telescopes for solar observation will be discussed. We will include discussions of the different types of solar filters available and the solar features visible using them. Solar projection and imaging will also be discussed. After the classroom session, we will go outside and try out our skills. Telescopes and binoculars (with filters) will be provided.
